So it's basically the same thing as if there were seven keyboardists all playing simultaneously, except that it's just me recording over myself seven times. Getting seven parts to line up is a BITCH. But I did it, and it turned out pretty alright! Again just made it the audio of a youtube video because there aren't any good audio hosting sites:
<lj-embed id="2" />
TAKE A LISTEN PLZ

He's kinda ugly and nothing like my reference photo. I didn't put a whole lot of time into this, though.

I really like the shading on this but something about her eyes looks all wonky to me, and again she looks nothing like the reference photo. I'm getting better at making faces look human, but still suck at getting a likeness.

And now for something completely different: I don't know if I have anyone on my flist who has played the old school Super Mario for the Nintendo 64, but I learned to play the music from the water levels on the piano. It's actually really pretty music. I recorded it and mixed in the second track that plays when you actually go in the water. I couldn't find any websites that wanted to let me upload an mp3 so, lame as it is, I made it the audio of a youtube video. Here it is, if you'd like to take a listen:

<lj-embed id="1" />

I also recorded the Hazy Maze Cave music but since it was like four tracks mixed together it didn't come out very good. That's pretty hard to do.

I've been doing a lot of this lately, though. Recording from my keyboard and mixing tracks. I don't know if I ever mentioned it here, but I wrote and recorded like 15ish cheesy little horror-esque sounding tracks for a "horror" movie that my friends and I were going to make (which didn't end up happening, haha). I'll totally upload those here if anyone's interested, by the way. But anyway, my point being, that was really fun and now I'm wishing I had something to write cheesy music for again. But, I've been wanting some ultra chill music to listen to, so maybe I'll work on making myself some of that. Starting with that Mario song, haha, it puts me to sleep.

AHH LIVEJOURNAL! GLORIOUS, GLORIOUS DAY, ISN'T IT?!

So here's the deal: There's gaseous methane on Mars. Methane, or CH4, is the simplest organic molecule. It also disassociates when it's hit with ultraviolet radiation. But Mars has no ozone layer! So ultraviolet radiation is hitting it all the time. So why is there methane?
The only explanation is that something is continuously releasing methane. One possible explanation is that it is a waste product of cellular processes in microorganisms.

!!!

There are other explanations, of course. One being that it is spewed up by volcanoes. Even this would be quite an innovation, as we don't currently believe that there are any active volcanoes on Mars. BUT, if it were the work of volcanoes, there would usually be other gases present that are also indicative of volcanic eruption, but they're not there! One other very plausible explanation is a process called serpentinization, which involves a reaction between the mineral olivine (Which we know to exist on Mars), carbon dioxide, and liquid water. This would therefore have to occur below the surface of Mars in order for the temperature or pressure to be great enough for water to exist in the liquid phase.

Here's where it gets even more fabulous: Carbon in methane that is produced by biological processes has a higher ratio of carbon-12 to carbon-13 isotopes than that produced by geological means. So if we send a mass spectrometer to Mars, we can look at the ratios and determine the source of the methane! Aaaaand, the Mars Space Lab rover that is due to voyage to Mars before the end of the decade will include a mass spectrometer. AWESOME.

So, basically, I am grinning.

So the first one I drew was the one in the upper right, while the webcomic was still fresh on my mind, so that one is really influenced by the comics and is not at all my usual style.

So you may or may not know what the Large Hadron Collider is, but I bet you've heard the media talking about it, and how it's going to create a black hole that will destroy the universe, right?

Do not listen to a word of this.

First, let me tell you what it is (Spouting off the top of my head; you can easily find as much info as you want by simply googling Large Hadron Collider). Built on the border between France and Switzerland, the Large Hadron Collider is a really revolutionary scientific machine. It will be colliding protons at about as close to the speed of light as a proton can get. This will simulate some of the conditions of the universe less than one billionth of a second after the Big Bang, allowing us to learn about that event. Other hopeful discoveries include the possible detection of the much sought after Higgs Boson, the particle thought to be responsible for giving matter mass, possible detection of extra, tiny dimensions important to string theory, and more that is probably too complex for my understanding (Please correct me if you find that any of this info is not accurate). Basically, what you need to know, is that we will learn a TON from this thing. Real revolutionary new information.

Now, let me explain why the media is hyping this thing up in a bad way: There is a chance that this thing will create a black hole. Before you run around in circles flailing your arms screaming apocalypse, listen: More likely than not, in the exceedingly unlikely event that a black hole is created, this black hole would be too unstable to cause any real damage. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that the chance that a stable black hole will be created is approximately one in 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Those are pretty bad chances. I mean, really, really bad chances. Yet the media is flipping out. Yesterday, Meridith Viera of the Today show, while talking about the LHC, said to Matt Lauer, "We might not be here tomorrow!". They're publicizing this microscopic threat so much and they're not bothering to educate anyone about the revolutionary discoveries that this machine may make. Even my teacher, today, was talking about the "threat", and proved not to know anything about what the machine will discover. He said, "You know what supposedly might happen when they turn that thing on?", and I said "Yes, yes I do. WE'LL LEARN STUFF."

This kind of media attention has led to an extremely uninformed, yet wrongly panicked public opinion on the machine. The scientists involved in the project have received death threats. A sixteen year old girl in India committed suicide after hearing misleading media coverage about the machine. This is not right. The media exists to sell news - and therefore they have to thrill, no matter what kinds of exaggeration and falsity they must use to do so. BUT THEY ARE TAKING THIS TOO FAR. Somebody died because of their exaggerations, and thousands more are living in fear when there's no need for it. This is a revolutionary achievement in science and the scientists who made it possible are receiving death threats for their work. This is shameful.
This morning at 3 A.M., the machine was turned on, and we're still here - around the world, the uninformed people breathed a sigh of relief. They don't know that nothing bad can even happen just from turning the damn thing on. No one's even colliding any particles until next month.

Don't be a sheep. Don't ignore the facts because the media tells you a thrilling story. THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE PAID TO DO.

I think it's pretty easy to admit that candidates are less concerned about what happens if they die than what their voters think about their choice for VP.

That said, it's pretty easy to see that, just as Joe Biden was meant to counter Obama's image of inexperience, Sarah Palin was meant to counter John McCain's image of "more of the same". Why else would he choose her? He had only met her once, ever. I doubt that he was made certain from their one meeting that she was a perfect fit for vice president.

But wait... what? Suddenly John McCain's a progressive for choosing a woman as his running mate? It certainly can't be for her beliefs, no, her beliefs are about as conservative as you can get. If she were a male with the same beliefs, John McCain would just continue to look like an old fart for choosing "him" as his VP.

So... using women, regardless of their beliefs, to look progressive. I really have to say that I resent this use of women in politics.

Okay. I've never been a feminist. In fact, feminazis are, in my opinion, among the most irritating of people.

But what the hell? I just watched Hancock, and I'm just fed up. Fed up with these goddamned action movies, and the way that women are portrayed. In every one of them! It's always the same. Either she's completely helpless the entire time, or she starts off as a sexy "tough" chick, only to be put in some situation where, again, she becomes helpless. And the man saves her.

Yeah, okay, we're catering action movies to men, many of whom think these situations are sexy and apparently never tire of watching the same thing play out over and over again. Yeah, okay, it's just about making money. So many people view these roles as a good thing for women, you know, breaking away from the delicate "girly" character, but what is supposed to be, I don't know, "girl power" in these female characters is usually nullified by the clothing they get put into, and of course, the fact that they never make it through the movie without needing to be saved. Not only that, but are we really promoting female empowerment by masculinizing women? Because that's what these characters are, you know.

And what the hell are the actresses thinking, agreeing to play these parts? Do they have any self respect? Do they even notice how demeaning this stereotype is? Oh, wait, they're getting paid. Never mind, then! I hate celebrities.

Like I said, I'm not even a crazy feminist or anything, but the trend is just too prominent to ignore. I notice it in almost every movie I go to, these days. It's ridiculous, it's completely unrealistic, but it's a whole crapload of guys' fantasy, so let's stick it in a movie and make cash!

I notice these things because I'm a woman going into a "man's field". I notice them because I'm the only girl in my school's technology club, and because I'm the only girl I know who has never worn makeup in public.

Anyway, I can recognize bullshit when I see it, and I hope you can too.
